Police encourage vigilance, cite increase in burglaries
State police are urging Fayette County residents to be extra vigilant, citing an increase in residential burglaries during daylight hours.
During a press conference held today, Trooper Scott Krofcheck said police are actively investigating all leads regarding several recent burglaries across the county and that arrests have been made.
“We want people to be aware of a rising crime trend in Fayette County. We’ve noticed a significant increase in residential daylight burglaries that have occurred within the last several months,” he said.
Cpl. Charles R. Frey Jr. said the state police barracks in Uniontown investigated 240 daylight residential burglaries and 46 commercial burglaries in 2010. As of the end of October, the barracks has already investigated over 300 residential and over 90 commercial burglaries.
“It’s a significant rise,” Frey said.
Police said they are working with Fayette County Crime Stoppers and that anyone with information can call the agency’s toll free hotline, which is 1-888-404- TIPS.
Jerome Venick, president of Crime Stoppers, said all callers remain anonymous and that up to $1,000 can be awarded for information leading to an arrest and conviction or the recovery of stolen items.
