Preparations being made for Light-up Night in Farmington

By Susy Kelly for Heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

The organizer of Light-up Night in Farmington knows Christmas isn’t all that far away and is checking her list of plans accordingly.

The 5th annual event will be held the evening of Dec. 9 at the Wharton Township Municipal Building, 114 Elliotsville Road, just off Route 381 south.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in a horse-drawn carriage for the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m., according to event organizer Virginia Brugger.

Joining Santa and Mrs. Claus in lighting the tree will be the mountain area’s championship youth flag football team, the Steelers. The team, consisting of 5- to 8-year-olds, also will be handing out candy canes during the event.

The A.J. McMullen Middle School band and chorus, with guest singer Judy Van Bremen, will lead caroling around the tree after the lighting.

Brugger said Frosty the Snowman will be mingling among the crowd. There also will be a bonfire, and hot chocolate and cookies will be available.

About 300 people attended last year, Brugger said, and she hopes to see an even bigger turnout this year.

“I decided a few years ago I wanted to do a light-up night in Farmington,” Brugger said. “The resort (Nemacolin Woodlands) does their thing, and I wanted to do this for the kids to get involved.

Workman Farms once again will be donating the tree for this event.
