Project issues call for artists

By Heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Artists from southwestern Pennsylvania are being invited to apply for the River Towns Public Art Project in Point Marion.

Artists are asked to create a piece of art that connects the industrial heritage of the glass industry in Point Marion with the conservation and natural beauty of the Cheat and Monongahela rivers.

The Sprout Fund Award of $2,500 will be leveraged with in-kind service and donations from the local community.

Project management is by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Student Conservation Association through River Towns, a two-year program that seeks to attract visitors and spur economic growth by focusing on rivers as important resources to be sustained and protected.

The art piece will be installed on an exterior wall of the Sadler Building on Penn Street. It would be highly visible to pedestrian and vehicular traffic as people pass through the town’s business district.

The request for qualifications deadline is Dec. 8.

The completion date is the end of June 2012.

A civic committee will evaluate all submissions. The committee will select three to four applicants who will be asked to develop their design submissions further and make formal presentations.

The presentations will be exhibited during a public reception in Point Marion in February, after which the winning artist will be chosen.

Committee members are Carl Able, Ella Bellings, Vickie Evans, Beth Reseter, Art Strimel and Katherine Wyda.

Copies of the request for qualifications/request for proposals are available at the Point Marion Public Library, at the Point Marion Borough Office and from Reseter at 304-379-2569 or bethreseter@yahoo.com.
