State Legion commander opposes budget cuts
The state commander of the American Legion, Kerrie Gill Sr., of Centerville, met recently with Sen. Pat Toomey, trying to persuade the member of the Joint Special Committee on Deficit Reduction to reach a compromise that wouldn’t hurt defense spending.
Gill said that without that compromise, the military will be saddled with cuts that will go too deep as automatic cuts are triggered by a process known as “sequestering,” with the cuts starting in 2013. With this weekend’s failure to reach a compromise, it looks as if those cuts may take place.
