Uniontown swamped by flood waters

By Josh Krysak heraldstandard.Com 1 min read

Flood waters destroyed nearly $35,000 in food destined for area food pantries and needy families Tuesday night and this morning in Fayette County, just one day before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Steady rains throughout the day Tuesday and early today resulted in flooding across Fayette County, with significant flooding reported throughout Uniontown.

The deluge forced officials at Fayette County Community Action Agency to close their doors Wednesday, with flooding particularly affecting the Community Action Food Bank and the Family Services Center on Beeson Avenue.

The food was planned for distribution throughout the month of December to about 3,000 area families.

“The Food Bank was particularly affected by the flood,” Community Action CEO Jim Stark said. “We are working on cleanup now and plan to re-open our offices on Monday. However, the Food Bank will take a little longer to get back to full operation again.”

He said that no food products will be distributed to pantries or available to food bank recipients until further notice.
