Fire damages North Union home
A fire blamed on a kerosene heater caused major damage to a North Union Township home Sunday afternoon.
Officials said the blaze erupted at the 1353 Connellsville St. residence around 2:40 p.m.
A firefighter with North Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, the primary responder on the call, said no one was home when the blaze began.
According to officials, homeowners had been using a kerosene heater inside the residence earlier in the day.
The homeowners, responders said, allegedly thought the kerosene heater had been turned off and moved it to an outside porch when they left the house.
However, the heater ignited the porch on flames and the fire quickly spread to the home.
Officials said the state police fire marshal was called and estimated the house sustained about $50,000 worth of damage.
No people suffered injuries as a result of the fire. However, a small dog that was the family’s pet died in the blaze.
The Red Cross was believed to be assisting at least two people with housing and other needs following the fire, officials said.
Hopwood and West Leisenring volunteer fire departments assisted North Union Volunteer Fire Department on scene.
Dunbar Volunteer Fire Department was on standby.
