Book of ex-basketball standout takes a shot at inspiring others

When Uniontown native Latia Howard wrote and self-published “The Heart of a Panther: A Story of Triumph,” she said her goal was threefold.

She said wanted to inspire young people to put education first; to raise awareness about strokes and heart health; and to offer courage through her story of perseverance to anyone who is struggling with their own issues.  

Howard was a star athlete at the University of Pittsburgh when a stroke ended her career in 1997.  She wrote about her story over the course of 10 years, as she dealt with the effects of the stroke and more health issues, including parotid cancer and a seizure disorder.  She decided to publish it herself because “that was the best method for me,” she said.
