The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will be kicking off the 2011 – 2012 Children’s Theater seaons with an exciting future of ancient and modern Chinese acrobatics and movement from the Silk Road Acrobats on Sunday, October 16.
Performing nine shows in the region, the Silk Road Acrobats will bring grace and percision to the stage at the Byham and then surrounding area high schools through October 23. The action packed show is sure to wow even the youngest audience members as the performers twist, turn and keep even the adults at the edge of their seats.
“There’s going to be a lion dance, diving, chair stacking, Chinese yo-yo, balancing, hula hoops and straw hat juggling,” said Sonny Soohoo, Group Director for the Silk Road Acrobats. “They will get to see something they most likely will have never seen. It’s a piece of Chinese tradition. It’s fun, exciting and educational.”
The show features six performers ranging from 22 to 26 who all originate from China. Several of the peroformers have won individual or group medals at international competitions for acrobatics and gymnastics.
“The most exciting act is the hoop diving because it encompasses chinese acrobatics,” said Soohoo. “It’s one of the oldest known acts out there. It was around since the begining in some different forms but it’s been around forever. From a cultural aspect, it’s pretty amazing and authentic.”
All shows are general admission and run approximately an hour in length. Tickets are $9.50 and available online or at the door. Public shows are as follows:
Sunday, October 16, 2 pm – Byham Theater
Wednesday, October 19, 7 pm – Gateway High School
Thursday, October 20, 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm – Marshall Middle School
Friday, October 21, 7 pm – Moon Area High School
Saturday, October 22, 11 am and 2 pm – Mt. Lebanon High School
Sunday, October 23, 2 pm – Seneca Valley Senior High School
Don’t miss an amazing start to the Children’s Theater season. These shows are truly a sight to see and wonderful for even the youngest children.
“There’s a lot of tumbling and that’s exciting and very action oriented,” said Soohoo. “There’s moments of anxiousness and at the end it’s kind of scary and like a roller coaster ride. It’s something all kids can like. If I was a parent, I would bring them just to see something cool that’s been a part of Chinese culture for a lot of years.”
