Clean energy grant awarded in Greene County
A foundation is receiving a share of $3.7 million in state funding to install electricity-producing turbines on the effluents of three mine water treatment plants in Greene County.
The Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA) said 13 clean energy projects across the state will share in the funding, which requires local matching funds.
In Greene County, the Foundation of the Pacific Pennsylvania Group Inc. will install three in-line turbine systems at wastewater treatment plants at three mining sites. The low-impact hydro turbines will be placed on the back end of a wastewater treatment plant to create electricity from the flow of the effluent.
The foundation was awarded a $264,000 grant and provided a $426,000 match, according to the PEDA.
“These innovative projects now have the funding to be implemented,” said state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Mike Krancer. “They will bring measurable energy efficiency and decreased air emissions; and some, like Pittsburgh’s natural gas-powered waste-hauling trucks, will serve as a model for other cities and states looking to implement cleaner-burning fuels.”
PEDA is an independent public financing authority that was created in 1982 to finance clean, advanced energy projects.
