Laurel Highlands board considers pool

Laurel Highlands School Board members discussed possible options to have a swimming pool added to the high school renovation project.

At Thursday’s meeting, board member Tom Vernon said the architect for the $38.9 million renovation project has been asked to supply the board with an estimate of what it would cost to convert a proposed auxiliary gym into a swimming pool.

A second option where a swimming pool may also be able to be located is also being considered and will be submitted to board members for their review.

The high school currently has a pool, however, one was not included in recent plans, causing some members of the public to voice concern.

In other matters related to the renovation project, the school board unanimously approved various items so that construction can begin.

The board entered into an agreement with Pashek Associates to provide environmental agency approvals and municipal agency approvals.

The board also entered into agreements with Professional Services Industries Inc. for asbestos and hazardous materials abatement specification design services and an asbestos and hazardous materials pre-renovation survey.

As for other business, the school board approved several resolutions for the electric, heating, ventilation and roof renovation project at the Fayette County Career and Technical Institute.

Laurel Highlands, Uniontown Area, Albert Gallatin Area and Brownsville Area high schools are sharing the cost of the project. Laurel Highlands’ share is $1,794,870.
