A Uniontown man is in Fayette County Prison after he allegedly hit his girlfriend and broke her wrist on Wednesday.

William Cecil Abbey, 57, is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and was cited for harassment after he allegedly injured Rose Ann Shaffer, 54, of Uniontown.

State police Trooper Eric Zona said the two were fighting in a wooded area at the end of West Kerr Street in North Union Township around 6:30 p.m. when Abbey hit Shaffer in the thigh with a tree branch. Then, police said, Abbey bent her wrist, breaking it.

Abbey was arraigned on the charges before Magisterial District Judge Wendy Dennis and placed in prison on $25,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
