California council hires two full-time officers

CALIFORNIA — California Borough Council promoted two part-time officers to full-time status during a council meeting that was continued twice.

The meeting started on Sept. 8, at which time Justin Schultz was promoted from part-time officer to full time on the police force. After most of the business was conducted, the meeting was continued until Sept. 13 and then again until Thursday.

During the meeting on Thursday, council accepted the resignation of full-time officer John Hackinson and changed the status of part-time officer Terry Child to full time.

In other matters, solicitor Ernest DeHaas was authorized to continue with legal action against illegally operated rooming houses. DeHaas was also authorized to file a land use appeal with Washington County Common Pleas Court in the Maund-Pagac case involving developers who had sought a variance to construct townhouse-type apartments in an R-1 single-family residential neighborhood. Neither the borough’s zoning hearing board nor the council acted on the matter, which has been deemed to be a de facto approval.

Council also voted to hire the former borough secretary, Elizabeth Pfrogner, to serve as a substitute borough secretary for vacations and other occasions.
