A Waynesburg man was killed Monday afternoon when his vehicle and a car collided in Carroll Township, Washington County.

Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco said John Lewis Thomas, 42, of East High Street was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 1 p.m. Warco said he died of head injuries.

Carroll Township police said the crash occurred shortly after noon as Thomas was traveling eastbound in a pickup truck on Route 136. Police said that Thomas’ pickup and a car driven by Mary Baxter, 64, of 418 Fifth St., California, collided near the intersection with the Mon/Fayette Expressway.

Warco said Thomas was partially ejected from the vehicle after it overturned following impact.

According to Warco, Baxter suffered injuries in the crash and was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. An update on her condition was not available Tuesday.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

Volunteer firefighters from Valley Inn and New Eagle joined emergency personnel from Tri-County Ambulance and the state police at the scene.
