McClellandtown man indicted for tax evasion
A McClellandtown hit it lucky with the Pennsylvania lottery, but didn’t pay taxes on the windfall, according to a federal indictment.
Sherman W. Friend, 69, was charged with two counts of tax evasion for not paying a total of $132,445 in taxes from 2009 and 2010. The indictment, handed down Wednesday, indicated that Friend had $101,818 of taxable income in 2009, and $378,779 of taxable income in 2010.
To avoid paying taxes, Friend had someone else collect on the winning tickets, the filing alleged.
The court documents do not indicate what portion of Friend’s taxable income came from lottery winnings, nor does it specify the game on which he won.
Each count of tax evasion is punishable by up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and supervised release for up to three years.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Pupo Lenihan issued a summons for Friend’s appearance on April 26 in federal court.
