A Fayette County teenager is facing a charge for harassment after an apparent argument over the use of a sledgehammer.

State police said the incident occurred around 10 a.m. Friday at the Fayette County Career and Technology Institute in Georges Township when two students began fighting over the hammer.

According to Cpl. Charles Frey, the teens were using a sledgehammer to work on an automobile outside the school on Route 857 when they began to argue over the use of the hammer.

Frey said that some “pushing and shoving” ensued, and that at one point, the 17-year-old student who had possession of the sledgehammer shoved it toward the 16-year-old victim, causing the hammer to strike the younger boy in the back.

Trooper Stefani Plume said that the 16-year-old suffered minor injuries  and was taken to Uniontown Hospital for treatment. Frey said the student suffered minor bruising and no internal injuries.

Investigating Trooper Christina Marth will file a summary charge of harassment against the 17-year-old student in Fayette County Juvenile Court, police said.
