WEST BROWNSVILLE – Police officers from more than a half dozen departments spent hours today searching for and then negotiating with a West Brownsville man after he stole a gun from a residence in Newell and then proceeded to get involved in incidents in Fayette and Washington counties.

After more than three hours of negotiating, police said they were able to take John Kerik, 28, into custody, in a field near the site of the new Walmart Supercenter on Route 40.

The incidents began this morning when Southwest Regional police were summoned to a residence in Newell for a reported theft of a rifle. Police said that the suspect, later determined to be Kerik, stole a gun from a family member in Newell and then proceeded to Uniontown where he made two attempts to talk to a woman there without success.
