Earl L. Rowan Sr, 88, of California, Pa., died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. 

He was born Thursday, January 10, 1924, in Charleroi, Pa., a son of the late Albert Leroy and Mary (Gamble) Rowan.

Earl served our country during WWII in the Army with the 191st Tank Battalion where he earned 5 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of Charleroi American Legion Post 22.

Earl was born and raised in Charleroi, and prior to entering the Army, belonged to the Sons of the American Legion. He loved camping with his family at Shawnee State Park in Bedford County Pa., and he was still very active with the 191st Tank Battalion attending several reunions.

Mr. Rowan was the Santa Claus for Murphy’s 5 & Dime and the California Girl Scouts for many years. He was active with the band parents, making cotton candy at the football games and for several years, he was the president of the local March of Dimes.

In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Paxton in 1975.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 35 years, Constance Ann (Adams) Rowan; four children: Thomas ‘Tuck’ Rowan and wife Ruth Ann, Earl Leroy ‘Lee’ Rowan Jr. and wife Brenda, Debra Dole, and James Rowan and wife Barbara. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

F r i e n d s w i l l b e received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME, INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California, PA on Saturday, December 22, 2012 from Noon until 2 p.m. when services will be held in the funeral home with Pastor Thomas Rowan officiating.

Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
