If anyone was happy about a recent restaurant opening, it was a county agency charged with helping children.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the grand opening this week of Fiesta Azteca Mexican Bar and Grill at 695 W. Main St., Uniontown went to Fayette County Children and Youth Services (CYS) to support its work providing comprehensive services to troubled, neglected, abused and dependent children and their families.

Recognizing its role in the community, the restaurant dedicated those proceeds to help pay back some of the goodwill it has already received, said Ramone Ruvalcaba, assistant manager.

Ruvalcaba explained the restaurant, owned by Raoul Munoz, joins several other Fiesta Aztecas in the region, including Parkersburg, W. Va., Athens, Ohio, and Hagerstown, Md.

“I know he has plans to open more in the region,” Ruvalcaba said.

Presenting authentic Mexican food, the restaurant also creates a rustic Mexican ambiance that includes ancient Aztec décor and furnishings.

Its menu has something for everyone, although it obviously features a number of Mexican dishes, including enchiladas verdes, pollo loco (a grilled chicken breast dish) and quesidilla Cancun (a grilled tortilla wrapped around shrimp and vegetables). All of its foods are prepared fresh, Ruvalcaba said.

“We buy as much of our produce and foods from the community,” he said, adding the restaurant already has a relationship with several vendors.

In addition to the restaurant, Fiesta Azteca has a full bar providing Margaritas, a variety of Mexican and domestic beers, liquors and other beverages.

Lunch and dinner specials, appetizers, a “Vegetariana” menu (for vegans), children’s menu and desserts round out the foods the staff prepares and serves.

So far, Ruvalcaba, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, said the reception from the dining community has been good.

“This is a nice population. And this town is growing, which is why we wanted to open here.

“We have a little bit of everything for everybody, even macaroni and cheese, cheeseburgers and fries, steaks, hot dogs, pizza and chicken tenders. If someone likes salads, we have salads.

“We also try to have things for people who don’t really know what Mexican food is,” he said, explaining that Fiesta Azteca’s fare is “much, much more than what people think (in comparison to) fast-food” eateries.

Fiesta Azteca employs about 15 people. Several are from the area but most are Latino.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

There are about 120 seats at tables, booths and the bar in the 3,600-square foot facility.

Takeouts are available.
