Lewis John Fisher, Sr.
Lewis John Fisher, Sr., age 84, of Farmington, Pa., died early Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Uniontown Hospital after a long battle with illness.
H e w a s b o r n o n September 14, 1927 in Wardsville, Ontario, Canada, the son of Tim Fisher and Janet (Wilson) Fisher.
Lew or ‘Papa’ or ‘Pops’ as he had become known in later life, moved to Southwestern Pennsylvania as a 20 year old bright-eyed baseball player.
‘Lefty Lew’ packed sandlots across the region, wowing the crowds with both his pitching prowess and his beguiling charm.
Although he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948, that event was overshadowed by another—the day he met his future wife, Mary Lou Bell of Uniontown, Pa., in July 1948 By October, they were wed.
Lew quickly left the baseball diamond for the coal mines following his marriage, working at Robena Mines for five years.
In the early 1950’s, Lew started his own landscaping company, Landscaping By Fisher, which became a house hold name across the region.
He and Mary Lou had three children and nine grandchildren, and his family became the focus of his life as he headed into retirement.
Lew loved the Lord, and as he battled with illness and disease for more than 15 years, his faith and positive outlook sustained him and inspired those who loved him.
He was a fighter and a strong man who loved to laugh, spend time with his family, and enjoy the beauty and wonder of God’s earth.
He was a longtime member of Faith Assembly of God in Uniontown, Pa.
Lew was inducted into the Fayette County Big 10 Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers.
Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Lou Fisher, who has cared for him steadfastly for 63 years; three children: son Lewis Fisher Jr., Hopwood Pa., son Daniel Fisher and wife Linda of Farmington, Pa., and daughter Terri Krysak and husband David, Ohiopyle, Pa.; nine grandchildren: Josh Krysak and wife Carly, Natalie Fisher, Emily Fisher, Clayton Krysak and wife Lacey, Tom Krysak and wife Kacey, Katie Fisher, Becky Fisher, Aaron Krysak and Brett Krysak; his first great grandchild, Jude Krysak; a sister, Leona Webster and her husband Don of Glencoe, Ontario, Canada; and brother, Timothy Fisher of Ontario, Canada.
Friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD F U N E R A L H O M E, HOPWOOD, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Visitation will continue on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in FAITH ASSEMBLY OF G O D C H U R C H, 690 Morgantown Road, Uniontown, Pa., from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the hour of the Service with the Rev. Jason Lamer and the Rev. Donald Immel officiating.
Interment will follow in Irwin Memorial Cemetery, Farmington, Pa.
