Food distribution set for Thursday

2 min read

Produce to People, a food distribution sponsored by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and organized by the Rev. Adam Lawson of Fresh Fire Church in Uniontown will be held Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Fayette County Fairgrounds along Route 119 in Dunbar Township.

The food distribution began in May 2011 in Fayette County and plans to continue through all of 2012 on the second Thursday of each month. The program provides supplemental food items, such as potatoes, onions, chicken, cabbage, fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt and many other items. Each month recipients receive approximately 55-65 pounds of food per household.

Registration for the distribution begins around 8:30am at the fairgrounds. There is no need to show proof of income or address to receive the food. Residents of Fayette County can simply arrive at the fairgrounds and bring a large box or laundry basket to put their food in. Those attending are encouraged to arrive early as food is given on a first-come, first-serve basis but typically plans to serve around 700 families each month.

The distribution will take place in the Grange Building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds however, registration and shelter is provided in the Fiddlers Building. This will allow more room for the distribution and get most if not all inside out of the cold weather. Volunteers will be directing recipients to the proper location once they arrive at the fairgrounds.

The program takes many volunteers to succeed and new volunteers are always welcome and encouraged to participate.

Each month 75 to 100 volunteers are needed to adequately handle the demand.

Anyone interested in volunteering or anyone with questions regarding the distribution are encouraged to call Fresh Fire Church at 724.580.7027 or by emailing pastor4freshfire@yahoo.co.
