PennDOT announces construction project progress
The state Department of Transportation has released an update of construction projects in Fayette County.
A look at the projects are as follows:
n Masontown Bridge — The contractor on this $49.6 million bridge replacement project is Brayman Construction Co. The project includes road approach work on the Greene County side. The bridge carries Route 21 between Masontown and Monongahela Township, Greene County. The tentative completion date is late 2014.
Update: The contractor is working on clearing and grubbing, utility relocation, and excavation on the Fayette County side of the bridge. The causeway for one pier is being constructed. While that is occurring, the contractor is doing temporary lane closures of no longer than 15 minutes at a time.
n Route 40 bridge preservation — This project includes pier and beam end repairs on dual three-span structures on Route 40 and painting, wearing surface replacement, deck repairs, steel repairs and pier repairs on a four-span structure carrying Route 2031 over Route 40 in South Union Township.
The contractor on the $ 1.2 million project is Manganas Enterprises and work will begin this month.
Update: Because of winter weather, work will not begin until sometime after March 15. At that time, motorists may notice some preliminary work being done.
n Trout Run Bridge — This project consists of the replacement of two bridge structures that are located on Route 1054 (Indian Head Road) over Trout Run Creek in Saltlick Township. The bridges are between Route 381 (Indian Creek Valley Road) and Route 1003 (Millerstown Road). The first structure is currently a steel I-beam bridge with a span length of 17 feet. It will be replaced with a concrete box culvert and will remain on the existing alignments. The second structure is a steel I-beam bridge that has a span length of 39 feet. It will be replaced with a concrete box beam bridge and also will remain on the existing alignments. Anticipated completion date is November. The contractor on the $1.3 million project is Frank Gavlik & Sons of Charleroi.
Update: The first phase is complete (precast box culvert). The second phase will began in June or July, and at that time a new detour will be in place.
n Route 711 truck escape ramp — This project involves a truck escape ramp near Florence Street, a truck pull-off area located south of the Hanson plant and appropriate signage along Route 711. The contractor on the $2 million project is New Enterprise Stone and Lime and it will tentatively be completed in September.
n Route 166 over Middle Run — This project calls for the complete replacement of a structurally deficient concrete T-beam bridge carrying Route 166 over Middle Run in German Township. The bridge will be replaced with a single-cell, precast concrete box culvert. Work on the road will consist of pavement reconstruction and resurfacing at the intersection of Route 166 and Route 3013 (Palmer Road). Single-lane alternating traffic will be maintained by temporary traffic signals throughout the duration of construction. Work is expected to begin in this month. Motorists may notice some preliminary work being done. Anticipated completion is September. The contractor on this $821,738 project is CH&D Enterprises of New Stanton.
n Route 3009 (Walnut Hill Road) over Coal Lick Run — The project is located in South Union Township and consists of replacing the existing bridge that carries Route 3009 (Walnut Hill Road) over Coal Lick Run. During construction, single-lane traffic on Route 3009 will be maintained by temporary traffic signals. The contractor on the $909,765 project is CH&D Enterprises. The project is scheduled to be complete in May 2013.

n Route 1054 over Indian Creek — This project consists of replacing the existing bridge that carries Route 1054 (Indian Head Road) over Indian Creek in Saltlick Township. The new bridge will be constructed in a way that will allow emergency vehicle access only. All through-traffic will be maintained using a signed detour route. The contractor on the $2.4 million project is Appalachian Construction. The tentative completion date is in March 2013.

n Route 166 over Dunlap Creek — This project in Luzerne and Redstone townships consists of replacing the existing bridge that carries Route 166 (Thornton Road) over Dunlap Creek. The contractor on the $1.7 million project is Frank Gavlik & Sons Inc. The tentative completion date is midsummer 2013.

n Pittsburgh Street Bridge — This project in Connellsville will consist of a bridge replacement and other miscellaneous construction necessary to tie into the approach road. The project is currently in the design phase. Traffic will be detoured when construction begins. Work is scheduled to be completed in October. The contractor on the $1.3 million job is The Velotta Co.
Update: Construction may not start for awhile, but motorists may notice some preliminary work being done. The project is waiting on right-of-way clearances.
n Route 21 at Easy Street intersection — The contractor on this $1 million intersection improvement project in Uniontown is Gulisek Construction LLC. Thel tentative completion date is late October.
n Route 2021 over Shutes Run — The contractor on this $659,486 bridge replacement project in North Union Township is Plum Contracting Inc. It will tentatively be complete in September 2013.
n Route 3013 (Palmer Road) over Middle Run — This project calls for the complete replacement of the bridge carrying Route 3013 (Palmer Road) over Middle Run near the Palmer-Croushore intersection in German Township. The new structure will be a single-cell, precast reinforced concrete box culvert. Work on the road approaches will consist of full-depth pavement reconstruction as well as overlay required to tie into the new bridge. The contractor on the $747,551 project is Donegal Construction Corp. of Greensburg. Traffic will be detoured during construction. Work is currently expected to begin after the start of the Albert Gallatin Area School District’s summer recess, pending right-of-way authorization or clearance. The contract completion date is set for October, although the project is required to be opened to normal traffic by Sept. 21.
Update: Although construction will not start until June, motorists may notice some preliminary survey work being done. Plan development and right-of-way acquisition are both complete.
