BULLSKIN TWP. — One person is dead and another person was injured following a mid-afternoon accident along Route 119, at the intersection with East End Road.

According to emergency responders, the male driver, Norman E. Schurg, no age given, was pronounced dead at Highlands Hospital following the 2 p.m. accident on Thursday.

The female passenger, Kathleen Schurg, no age given, was flown by helicopter to UPMC-Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for treatment.

Bob Spellman of Uniontown said he was traveling northbound on Route 119 and watched as the small, Chevrolet truck, also in the northbound lane, veered off the highway and onto private property.

“There were no brake lights,” said Spellman. “The truck just kept moving to the right.”

After traveling a short distance, the truck traveled over an embankment before coming to rest in a stream along East End Road.

“It was amazing that he didn’t hit anyone or the house,” said Spellman.

Spellman and his passenger stopped to help the couple as did Bullskin Township firefighter James Smith.

“I was on my way to the (Bullskin Township VFD) fire station and saw folks standing alongside the road so I stopped,” said Smith.

Along with Spellman, the two men pulled Norman Shrug from the truck to the embankment and began to administer CPR.

“He was talking, but then lost consciousness,” said Smith. “He didn’t have any pulse after he lost consciousness.”

Fayette EMS personnel along with firefighters from Bullskin and Connellsville Township fire departments worked quickly to get Norman Schurg from the stream bank to an ambulance.

Paramedics continued CPR as he was lifted over the embankment into the ambulance.

Kathleen Schurg was taken by Fayette EMS to the medical helicopter pad located on Falcon Drive. There was no information about her condition.

State police also responded to the scene of the accident.
