Madelyn Jeanne (Elmo) Sheperd

Madelyn Jeanne (Elmo) Sheperd, age 85, of Uniontown, Pa., died peacefully on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Peroni Personal Care Home.

She was born on May 29, 1926 in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Fee) Elmo.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, William M. Sheperd, and their stillborn infant daughter, Debbie.

Jeanne was the cherished mother of William L. Sheperd, VMD and his wife Michelle, with whom she made her home and grandmother of Audrey J. Sheperd, who was ‘the apple of her eye’, Marty Lawson, Andrew and Samantha Fike, and Christopher Mitchell. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Sheperd) Franks of Cleveland, Ohio.

Jeanne was a graduate of Waynesburg College, earning a bachelor of science degree in education and psychology, and a master’s degree in education. While in college she was very athletic and was active in swimming and volleyball.

She was an elementary and high school teacher at Hatfield Elementary and Laurel Highlands High School until she retired.

Jeanne was very active in her community serving as a member of the board of directors of the Fayette County Mental Health Association, and Fayette Drug and Alcohol Commission. She had also been a member of P.S.E.A., B.P.O. Elks 370, and the Sons of Italy. Jeanne also enjoyed teaching swimming.

After she retired, she joined her son at the Camelot Veterinary Hospital, where she worked as his office assistant for many years.

Jeanne was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved teaching. She was known for her kindness and compassion, and an unforgettable smile.

She will be sadly missed by her collie, Merlin, and her two cats, Angel and Karma, as well as her grand-dog, Ladybug.

Friends will be received at the STEPHEN R. HAKY FUNERAL HOME, INC., 603 N. Gallatin Ave., Ext., Uniontown, Pa., on Friday evening, March 23, from 7 to 9 p.m and on Saturday, March 24, from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. A Blessing Service will be held at a time to be announced.

Interment will be privately held at Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
