A Smithfield man was killed Tuesday night when the farm tractor he was operating overturned, pinning him underneath.

Officials from the Fayette County coroner’s office said Ray Hearn, 81, was driving a large farm tractor on his property in Smithfield when he disembarked the vehicle to open a gate. While opening the gate, the tractor overturned on top of Hearn, pinning him underneath, officials said.

Hearn was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:44 p.m. by deputy coroner John Kondrla.

Officials said that no autopsy will be performed.

Brownfield Funeral Home in Smithfield is handling funeral arrangements for Hearn.
