For more than two decades, the Fayette Board of Realtors has provided its members and affiliates access to a variety of services related to the real estate industry as well as education and support.

The nonprofit organization, located at 92 E. Main St. in Uniontown, received its charter on Nov. 15, 1960, from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which it is a member.

Since then, Brenda K. Lilley, executive officer, said the board has grown to include 130 primary, secondary and affiliate members consisting of real estate agents, appraisers, bankers, home inspectors, attorneys and public utility companies.

“Our board owns and operates a multiple listing service for our members and member agencies as well,” said Lilley.

While a real estate agent is licensed to help consumers buy and sell commercial or residential property, not all real estate agents are Realtors.

According to Lilley, a real estate agent is considered a Realtor when he or she becomes a member of NAR, “The Voice for Real Estate,” as the organization says.

The term Realtor is a trademark referring to a real estate professional who’s an active member of NAR and abides by its strict code of ethics.

The NAR states that to earn a designation, a Realtor has taken course work and demonstrated specific skills, performance and knowledge in a paraticular area of the real estate industry.

The National Realtor’s Association serves as the world’s largest professional association, with more than 1 million members.

It is comprised of real estate agents who are involved in residential and commercial real estate as brokers, salespeople, property managers, appraisers, counselors and others engaged in all aspects of the real estate industry.

According to Lilley, 102 Realtors and 13 affiliate members are from Fayette County, while eight affiliate members and five Realtors are from neighboring counties.

Lilley said the board is also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors.

The board elected new officers for 2012 during its annual dinner in December with Deborah Kirch, president; Scott Cavinee, president-elect; Jacqueline Fiano, vice president; and Scott Detweiler, secretary/treasurer.
