Architectural site safe, cabin vandalized

By Christine Haines heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

A log cabin owned by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy was broken into over the weekend, but nothing was stolen and nearby Fallingwater was undamaged.

The initial state police report listed the address of the incident as 1478 Mill Run Road, the address of the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural masterpiece, Fallingwater. Lynda Waggoner, executive director of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which owns both Fallingwater and the Bear Run Nature Reserve where the vandalism took place, said the report was overblown.

“It was not Fallingwater. It was an ancillary building used by teachers. Two windows were broken, but nothing was taken,” Waggoner said. “Things were moved about. Someone clearly went through things, but we don’t keep anything of value there.”

The police report indicated that the suspect entered and left the property on foot via the Laurel Highlands trails. The break-in occurred between 6 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

“We have gates, so a car could not get in there,” Waggoner said. “It’s on the reserve. We have nearly 5,000 acres,” she added.

According to Waggoner, the one-bedroom log cabin is located about three quarters of a mile from Fallingwater and is on the opposite side of the road.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call state police at 724-439-7111.
