Park board plans for sewerage installation

LUZERNE TWP. — The Patsy Hillman Park Board is preparing for the completion of public sewer lines that will serve the park.

The lines should be ready for the park and other customers to tap in by the end of April or the beginning or May, according to Luzerne Township Supervisor Gregg Downer.

Several members of the park board recently met with a representative from Fayette Engineering of Uniontown, the company that designed the new sewerage system, and it was recommended that the park install 6-inch lines to connect restrooms at the park to the 8-inch line at the park entrance. Board member Bob Bevard said those connections were suggested for the current restrooms at the Hillman pavilion and for the concession stand, where an additional restroom has been proposed. It also was suggested that a manhole be installed near the concession stand to accommodate any future development on that side of the park.

Options for servicing an additional restroom on the far side of the lake were also discussed with Fayette Engineering, Bevard said, with the engineering firm suggesting a 2-inch service line and grinder pump. Because of state environmental regulations regarding the lake and adjacent wetlands, it was noted that the route for a sewer line that could serve the Luzerne pavilion is unclear at this time.

The park is co-owned by Luzerne Township and Brownsville Borough. It was noted that each municipality has its own engineer, and that neither retains Fayette Engineering. The park board asked Downer to have the township’s engineer, Widmer Engineering of Connellsville, look into designing a restroom for the concession stand area so the project can be put out for bids this summer.

The board is also looking for donated materials or labor for the installation of the new sewer lines to the Hillman pavilion and the concession stand. Downer estimated about 300 feet of 6-inch pipe is needed.

In another matter, board member Dave Polvinale said that the board has not yet reorganized for this year. In the absence of the current board President Frank Ricco, it was decided that the reorganization meeting would be held in April.

Plans for motocross racing at the park also remain on hold, with further information needed from the organizer before the park board can seek zoning exceptions for the race. Board member Jamie Gammon said she would invite the organizer to the April meeting. Brownsville Councilman James Lawver said holding races at the park would provide both additional income and publicity for the park.
