State police said a young girl was struck by a vehicle in South Union Township around noon Friday.

Cpl. Charles Frey said the incident occurred at Huggins Mobile Home Park when a vehicle driven by a resident in the park struck the child as the driver was entering the residential area.

“He came in to the park and hit her and then continued on to his trailer,” Frey said. “Some of the neighbors went after him and he ran out the back of his home but we were able to locate him and take him into custody. He is saying he didn’t even realize he had struck the child.”

Frey said the girl, who he described as 3 or 4  years old, was walking along the road when the accident occurred.

He said the child was taken by Fairchance Ambulance to Uniontown Hospital for treatment.

Frey noted that the girl was conscious and crying when police arrived at the scene.

The extent of her injuries was not released, however, Frey said they did not appear to be life-threatening.

Frey said the suspect was still in police custody following the incident and said that officers are continuing to investigate to determine if charges will be filed.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending the formalization of charges.
