Paul Edward Smith, age 87, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2012.

Paul was born October 19, 1924 in Terra Alta, W.Va., son of the late William Russell Smith and Kathleen Belle Wilson Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Winifred Smith and Russell Sylvester Smith and a sister, Nellie Smith Franks.

Paul served in the US Navy from February 18, 1944 thru April 22, 1946 during WW II as an S1/C and a cook on the USS Dobbin (AD-3). Paul received the ALNAV 76-46, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.

He belonged to International Union of Operating Engineers Union Local 66 from August 1, 1953 through January 1, 1987. Paul was a member of the former VFW Post 47 in Uniontown.

Paul formerly played with the Falcons Band and eventually formed the Country and Western Band “The Rainbow Five” and played guitar in this area for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delores Jean Havens Smith, whom he married on October 9, 1946; one son, Ronald Lee Smith and his wife Bernie of Masontown, Pa.; two granddaughters, Rhonda Lee Smith, Erie, Pa. and Lorrie Jo Barber and her husband Brian Thomas Barber, Clayton, N.C.; one grandson, Ronald Lee Smith Jr. of Masontown, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Drew Michael Cobert, Macie Marie Cobert, Madyson Joy Cobert, Kaely Rae Barber and Gracie Kathryn Barber; two sisters, Martha Elizabeth Faith and Queen Pauline Cain and her husband, Gilbert Cain; three brothers, William Welton Smith and his wife Margarite; Melvin Harry Smith and his wife Maxine and James Willard Smith and his wife Alice Janell; one brother-in-law, Donald Lewis Havens and his wife Frances and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Monday, May 7, 2012 until 11:00 a.m., the hour of service with Mr. Michael Cook of the Uniontown Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiating.

Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fairchance, Pa.
