Firefighters remained on the scene of a fire late Wednesday that heavily damaged a home in South Union Township.

No one was home at 338 Derrick Ave. when smoke began to rise from the roof, according to the homeowner, Jennifer Hardin.

Hardin said she, husband Warren and two sons live in the home located at the corner of Derrick Avenue and Grace Lane. She said neighbors alerted them to smoke coming from the roof. Emergency resonders were called to the scene at about 9 p.m.

Hardin said there was no access to the attic area from inside the house, but there were crawl spaces on either side of the house. Firefighters continued to battle the flames on the roof from outside of the home.

No information about the cause of the fire was available by press time.

Several fire companies responded, including South Union Township, Hopwood, Uniontown and Fairchance. State police were also on scene.
