Lemont Furnace anti-drug community day planned

By Steve Ferris heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

A local ministry is planning a community day featuring a yard sale, bands performing spiritual music and an anti-drug motorcycle group at the North Union Township Volunteer Fire Department on June 2.

Julie Miller of the nondenominational Solid Foundation Ministries said the event will feature a variety of activities, but the goal is to encourage children not to use drugs.

“The underlying theme is a drug-free community,” Miller said.

The yard sale will begin at 8 a.m. and the bands and other activities will start at noon.

Two Ohio bands, The Purkeys and The Riddels, will play inspirational music. The ministry will accept donations for snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn that will help cover the bands’ expenses, Miller said, adding that the fire department might sell food to benefit the department.

A large “bouncy house,” face painting and balloons will be provided for children. Prize drawings also will be held.

Carlos Reyes, a former New York City gang member and drug addict who is now member of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA), will talk to children about the trouble he got into when he was a teenager and urge them to chose a drug-free lifestyle, Miller said.

“He spent 10 years in federal prison for the crime he committed,” Miller said.

Several CMA members are expected to attend and people coming to the event are encouraged to ride their motorcycles.

The event is expected to end around 5 p.m.

People wishing to take part in the yard sale should call Miller at 724-880-6569.
