Connellsville remembers fallen heroes

By Joyce Koballa heraldstandard.Com 1 min read

CONNELLSVILLE — As the community paused Monday to remember fallen heroes who gave their lives for our freedom, the keynote speaker for the Memorial Day service provided insight on the ancient custom that originated 2,500 years ago in Greece.

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Frank J. Zadell Jr. addressed the crowd at the war memorial where he briefly recalled memories of standing in the same place in 1968 with friends he served with.

Zadell went on to say, “It may surprise you to learn that Memorial Day or Decoration Day, did not start in the United States, but in Greece when the graves of communities’ heroes were decorated with flowers and garlands.”
