Light-up Night expands to downtown Brownsville
BROWNSVILLE — Several businesses and nonprofit organizations will be joining in this year’s Light-up Night in Brownsville on Friday.
The traditional Light-up Night parade sponsored by the Greater Brownsville Area Chamber of Commerce will wind through the luminaria-lined streets of Brownsville and West Brownsville starting at 5:30 p.m., ending at Nemacolin Castle around 7 p.m. where treats will be handed out to children.
The Brownsville Area Historical Society will continue its yearlong 50th anniversary celebration with carolers and re-enactors on the grounds, as well as tours of the castle, which will be decorated for the holidays.
There also will be activities in the Snowdon Square area, where Mitchell’s Cafe is sponsoring a live Nativity, horse-drawn wagon rides, gingerbread house and ornament contest. The contest winners will be announced between 8:30 and 9 p.m. There also will be cookies available for children to decorate.
The Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. (BARC) is also participating in the evening’s events, with both the Flatiron Building Heritage Center and the Frank L. Melega Art Museum open from 5-9 p.m. Capture Gallery on the lower level of the Flatiron Building will be open, featuring art from Brownsville Area High School students and three local artists: Bethany Anderson, Joe Materkowski and gallery owner Jeff Jones.
BARC and Mitchell’s Cafe have partnered to offer the “Passport to Brownsville” on Light-up Night. Passports will be available at eight locations that will be open Friday evening. Those locations include the Brownsville Free Public Library, which will be open until 7 p.m., Team Humanity clothing in the Gazalie Building (Market Street at Albany Road), which will be open from 5-9 p.m., and Nonna’s Trunk, which will be open from 4-7 p.m., as well as the sites already mentioned.
Each of the eight sites will offer a passport stamp on Light-up Night. Passports with at least 5 stamps can be dropped off at either the Flatiron Building Heritage Center or Mitchell’s Cafe, where a drawing for a gift basket will take place at 9:30 p.m.
