Frazier hires PSBA to help revise policy manual

PERRYOPOLIS — The Frazier School Board hired the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) to help revise the district’s policy manual over the next two years.

The board on Thursday entered into a service contract with the PSBA at a cost of $7,700 to be paid for in three separate installments.

“This will be a monumental task so it’s a multi-year project,” said Superintendent Dr. David Blozowich.

According to Blozowich, the majority of Frazier’s policies have not been updated since the 1990s and need to be brought closer in line to the 21st century.

Blozowich noted the board reviewed the district’s bullying policy this year along with a few others in 2010.

“I think it should be a priority,” said Director Deborah Vargo-Alekson.

Blozowich said the PSBA will visit the district as the first step and then meet with the board’s policy committee.

Blozowich added the policy changes would most likely undergo several drafts before they are formally adopted.

Director Stacey Erdely stressed concerns with adhering to the policies once they are in place.

“If we’re going to spend money on the policies let’s at least follow the policies,” said Erdely.

In another matter, the board approved a one-year contract with U.S. Securities of Bridgeville for security services following an hour executive session.

Business manger Kevin Mildren said the district initially submitted a 90-day notice with intent to terminate its current contract with U.S. Securities in order to receive quotes from other interested parties, including U.S. Securities.

Turning to other business, the board agreed to split the media equipment/stage crew position into two separate positions with salaries of $1,357 for stage crew and $2,036 for media equipment operator.

Blozowich requested separate positions to cut down on costs while the district was having difficulty finding someone that could do the media part.

In an unrelated issue, the board agreed to hire Michelle Martin as a long-term substitute for home economics at the middle school at a rate of $100 a day without benefits.

The board also hired Amanda Humbert and Lisa Kortina to fill two, four-hour part-time cafeteria positions at a rate of $12.40 per hour.
