Brownsville plans 9/11 memorial ceremony

By Christine Haines heraldstandard.Com 1 min read

A special ceremony will be held Saturday combining a 9/11 memorial service with the 9/11 day of service in honor of emergency responders.

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in the Snowdon Square parking lot in downtown Brownsville and hosted by Mayor Lester Ward.

“We will have the ladder trucks forming an arch to hang the flag from,” Ward said.

Local Boy Scouts will present the 9/11 flag and area American Legion honor guard members will conduct a flag ceremony and gun salute, accompanied by a bugler playing taps.

Ward said speakers for the event include the fire chiefs from Brownsville Fire Company No. 1 (North Side) and South Brownsville, as well as U.S. Army Reserves Col. Ros Gammon.

The invocation will be offered by the Rev. Donald Bowers of Christ Church and Brownsville Area High School student Christian Sesek will sing a selection of patriotic songs.

A food drive also will be held, with canned goods accepted during the ceremony that will be donated to the Fayette County Food Bank. Food donations are not required for participation in the public ceremony.

Ward said the ceremony should last about an hour.
