Charges held for trial in hospital assault
A Uniontown man who police allege violently attacked employees and a patient in two separate encounters at Uniontown Hospital in May will stand trial.
Uniontown police Sgt. Wayne Brown said Dominick Campione, 42, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, four counts of simple assault and two counts of harassment.
Campione waived all charges against him to Fayette County Court during a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros.
Brown said the first incident occurred on May 10 when Campione, who was a patient in the hospital’s behavioral health unit, approached a nurse while she was working at a nurse’s station.
Brown said Campione first glanced around after approaching the nurse and then began to beat her in the face and head with his fists.
After Campione knocked her to the ground, another nurse attempted to subdue Campione, who then began to pummel her in the face and head, Brown said. At that point, a patient attempted to aid the nurses and tackled Campione, who managed to assault the patient as well.
Brown said one nurse suffered a broken nose and a concussion and the other suffered multiple facial injuries, as well as abrasions to her arms and legs.
The patient who came to their aid also suffered multiple facial lacerations and bruises. Both nurses said the assaults were unprovoked.
The following day, Brown said a unit coordinator had been assigned to monitor Campione.
While watching him from outside his room, the woman told police that Campione abruptly sat up in his bed and began to stare at her.
Campione then got out of his bed and walked out of his room to where the woman was observing him and began to violently beat her in the face and head. Brown said that the woman suffered a broken nose and other facial injuries.
