Powerball ticket worth $1 million sold in Uniontown
A Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold this week in Uniontown.
Lauren Piccolo, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Lottery in Harrisburg, confirmed Friday that a winning ticket was purchased at Byers Main Street Market, located at 264 W. Main St., for Wednesday’s drawing.
“We don’t know who the winner is until they come forward to claim their prize. Once they do — as soon as it’s validated by our security team — we are able to release the winner’s name,” said Piccolo.
The ticket sold in Uniontown matched all five white balls — 13-26-39-41-42 — but not the red Powerball 10. That means the winner will receive $1 million, what is called a second-tier prize, minus 25 percent federal withholding tax.
Piccolo said the winner must come to the Harrisburg headquarters during business hours to have the ticket verified by the security team. The retailer will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Piccolo said one winning ticket was sold in Iowa for the $202 million jackpot.
Meanwhile, Angela Trotti, a clerk at Byers Market, said the winning ticket was purchased at 6:29 p.m. Wednesday by a Uniontown man who works at an area power plant.
“Somebody came in and bought $40 worth of tickets and one was a winner without the Powerball,” Trotti said. “It was a regular customer who was in a group of four people.”
She continued, “He walked in Thursday and said ‘I’ve got the Powerball ticket.’ I said ‘You’re kidding me.’ He said, ‘No.”‘
Trotti contacted lottery officials who gave her instructions for the winner.
“I was excited. He was calm as can be,” said Trotti. “I’m very happy for them. They’re a nice bunch of guys — down to earth people.”
A press release from the Pennsylvania Lottery noted, “In the 2010-11 fiscal year, in addition to awarding more than $33 million in prizes to Fayette County winners, the Pennsylvania Lottery contributed more than $15.7 million to programs serving Fayette County’s older residents.
Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
