Redstone Twp. reassures residents’ concerns about helicopter

REDSTONE TWP. – Over the past week, residents have been alarmed by a helicopter that has been frequently sighted at Redstone Park, but Chairman Ralph Rice said there is “nothing to worry about.”

Seismic testing is being done in the township, he said.

Secretary George Matis said he received three calls at home from residents, and Fayette County 911 has received a multitude of calls that were transferred to Redstone police, inquiring why the helicopter was located at the park.

“Some people are concerned because they don’t know what’s going on,” said Vice Chairman Larry Williams. “They see something dropping out of the sky, and they don’t know if we’re being attacked by terrorists.”

In other matters, the supervisors opened four bid applications for the township’s road program and selected Victor Paving in Monongahela, Pa., to perform the work. Victor Paving had the lowest bid at $280,486, while A. Folino Construction in Oakmont, Pa., had the highest bid at $314,017.

Colvin Run, a portion of Braznell Road, Allison Road, Red Hill, Filbert 1 and Tower Hill will be resurfaced. The work must be done by September 30, said Williams. Partially funded by general funds, the work will also be covered by liquid fuels money.

The supervisors also:

— Announced spring cleanup dates for the township. Residents who have their garbage collected on Monday will participate in spring cleanup on April 22 only, while residents who have their garbage collected on Wednesday will have their cleanup day on April 24. Tires, oil, batteries, debris from construction, oil filters, paint cans or auto parts will not be accepted.

— Adopted a resolution to install a fire hydrant on Filbert Orient Road by Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority, and the hydrant fund will cover the costs. Property owners presented a petition to the board to install it. If residents are within 780 feet of the hydrant, they will pay a tax in accordance with the yearly assessment. Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority charges $100 a year.

— Announced that All Around Fence Company will install a fence around the new playground at Redstone Park for $5,232. Funding will be provided by parks-and-recreation money.

— Announced that Robert Jurosco will operate Lee’s Plumbing and Excavating at 653 National Pike as a staging satellite location for tool and equipment storage.

— Thanked the Grindstone Lions Club and First Christian Church of Allison for cleaning the debris along the roads in the township.
