Richard Melvin Greene Sr.

Richard Melvin Greene Sr., of Bedford Heights, OH, was born December 21, 1947 in Grays Landing, PA to the late Earnestine Greene and Sal Ross. He departed this life to be with the Lord on April 15, 2013 with his family by his bedside.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, LeRoy Jr. and Howard (Bunk) Greene and two sisters, Beulah Mae and Vivian Greene.

Richard was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and sang in the choir under Rev. Eddie Walker.

A graduate of Albert Gallatin High School, Masontown, PA, he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track, and was awarded a scholarship to Wiley College in Texas.

Following college Richard enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and served his country fighting in the Vietnam War, resulting in him being the honored recipient of the distinguished Purple Heart for his courageous valor.

As a retired veteran, Richard worked for U.S. Steel for several years before enrolling at Lakeland College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Electronics. He was then employed by First Energy of Cleveland, Ohio, and was also a member of the UWUA Local 270.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife Veronica (White) Greene; his children: Richard Jr., Lyndale, and Earnest Greene, all of Cleveland, OH; eleven grandchildren; his step-children, Tara, Tamara, and John C. Gray, all of Cleveland, OH; twelve step-grand-children; and four step-great grandchildren; his sisters, Jessie Carter and Juanita Easterling, both of Masontown, PA, and Catherine Curry of Pittsburgh, PA; an uncle, Charles Hall, of Columbus, OH; and an aunt, Allie Hall, Bellevue, WA.

Richard will be greatly missed by his loving family of numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Friends and family will be received at the CALHOUN FUNERAL HOME, 23000 Rockside Road, Bedford Heights, OH 44146.

The viewing will be Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m., and Monday, April 22, 2013 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., immediately followed by the hour of service.

Interment will be at Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, OH.
