Growth in North Union keeps taxes low
All taxes are holding steady in North Union Township for 2014.
The supervisors Tuesday adopted a final budget of $2,754,500, down slightly from the 2013 budget, with no change in any of the taxes. The property tax will remain at 0.447 mills, or $44.70 per $100,000 in assessed value, the same as it has been since 1960, according to Supervisor Curtis Matthews. Matthews said the township is able to keep property taxes low because of the additional funds generated by the earned income and the mercantile taxes.
The general fund budget of $1.8 million includes nearly $1.4 million for highways. The township receives an additional $353,000 in state highway aid funding to be used for resurfacing, equipment purchases, traffic lights and road salt.
While the general fund budget includes $100,000 for recreation, an additional $120,000 is earmarked for the recreation center in the Special Project Fund, and there is another $35,000 in the budget for the Recreation Center Fund.
The supervisors also approved three sewerage planning modules for construction projects in the township. The first is for a gas station for trucks at University Drive and Eberly Way, the second is for a repair garage at 79 Atlas Road, and the third is for Head Start of Fayette County for a facility on Commonwealth Drive near the recreation center.
“With all of these sewerage planning modules, we have a little bit going on here,” Matthews said.
The supervisors also approved the transfer of a liquor license from Henry Clay Township to Double Vision LLC for an establishment at 6 Oliver Road in Oliver Plaza. The transfer must still be approved by the state Liquor Control Board. This is the second time the supervisors granted their approval for the transfer. The previous application was under the name of the owner, Gene Tucciaroni.
“The LCB denied my application because I own the plaza and there is a beer distributor there,” Tucciaroni said.
Tucciaroni said the application under the corporate name is expected to be approved.
The supervisors also approved a stop sign at the intersection of Oliver Road and Oliver 2 Road near the Sheetz store.
