North Union supervisors approve infrastructure for businesses
The North Union Township supervisors on Tuesday accepted a new road and approved a sewage module for separate businesses.
Supervisors unanimously voted to accept ownership of Speedway Boulevard, located off Atlas Crossing Road, where new businesses will be opening.
A crematorium and a cemetery vault manufacturer plan to open on the the new road, Supervisor Curtis Matthew said.
The supervisors inspected the road and its storm water drainage, Matthews said.
State Department of Transportation officials looked at the road and indicated that it would qualify for liquid fuels fund reimbursement, he said.
The property on Speedway Boulevard has been subdivided into four lots measuring 3.5 acres each, Matthews said.
A sewage module was approved for a new Mitsubishi auto dealership on Route 51 adjacent to the recently opened Shorkey Kia dealership, Matthews said.
Approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection is needed, he said.
In other business, Lt. Jeff Fisher, the recently appointed commander of the local state police station, attended the supervisors meeting.
The station is referred to as the Uniontown station, but it is located in the township.
Fisher, who became the commander in July, told the supervisors that he is trying to visit all the townships in Fayette County.
He said the state police have a good relationship with the township supervisors and said they could call the station anytime.
The supervisors complimented the work of the state police.
In a separate matter, supervisors reminded residents about the township’s snow removal procedures.
Main roads are the first roads that township crews plow because emergency vehicles must be able to travel those roads, said Thomas Kumor, chairman of the board of supervisors.
Secondary roads are next followed by lanes and alleys, Kumor said.
Vehicles parked near intersections interfere with plow trucks so residents should avoid parking near intersections during snows, he said.
Crews try to make roads passable, but it is difficult to keep roads completely free of snow, especially during a heavy snowfall, he said.
Residents who experience problems driving on roads should call the township building at 724-438-6316.
In unrelated business, trash collectors will not be allowed to pick up discarded electronics beginning on Jan. 18, Matthews said.
He said they contain toxic heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, and valuable metals, such as gold, silver and copper, which can be recycled.
Goodwill Industries off New Salem Road near Uniontown Mall accepts and recycles unwanted electronics, Matthews said.
In another matter, supervisors reminded residents that the U.S. Postal Service is holding a meeting to discuss changes in operations at the Lemont Furnace Post Office in the North Union Fire Department in Lemont Furnace at 6 p.m. Friday.
