LUZERNE TWP. — Firefighters from six area volunteer fire companies battled frigid temperatures Friday as they worked to extinguish a morning blaze that gutted a former service station along Hopewell Road.

James Dugan, fire chief for Isabella Volunteer Fire Company, said flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived on scene at 11:55 a.m.

Dugan said the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and was being used as a woodshop.

Dugan added the fire was extinguished in about 2 1/2 hours and that the owner indicated he did not have insurance.

“He lost a good bit,” said Dugan.

Firefighters from Luzerne Township, Allison #2, Brownsville, South Brownsville and LaBelle volunteer fire companies assisted at the scene along with Fayette EMS.

Dugan said he believes the cause of the fire could be electrical in nature, however the state police fire marshal has been called in to investigate.

“I want to thank all the fire companies that came out to assist in the cold,” added Dugan.
