Police capture man wanted in aggravated assault
Police said they captured a Brownsville man wanted for allegedly assaulting a woman in Belle Vernon on May 8.
Benjamin William Craig, 29, of 221 Bank St. faces charges of aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon, theft, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and harassment.
According to John D. Hartman, chief of Southwest Regional police, officers in Monessen took Craig into custody at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Hartman said that the charges were filed after Craig assaulted Tracy Rocco, 33, of Monessen at a location on Main Street.
Hartman said that Craig repeatedly punched and kicked Rocco in the head and face and then attempted to steal her pickup truck following an argument around 7 p.m.
Rocco attempted to stop Craig, but Hartman said that Craig attempted to run Rocco over with the pickup truck after she fell to the ground.
Police said that Rocco suffered multiple injuries, including injuries to her head and neck.
She was treated a Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township following the assault.
Craig was placed in Fayette County Prison on $10,000 straight cash bond following his arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Dwight K. Shaner.
