Salvation Army proposes new store

By Christine Haines chaines@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

The Salvation Army Thursday presented plans for a new retail store to the Uniontown Planning Commission.

Ray McCaughey, of Strada, the Pittsburgh architectural firm handling the project, said the new store will be on the same site, 54 South Mount Vernon Ave., as the current store, but will be considerably larger.

McCaughey went before the commission Thursday to request a lot consolidation and to present the site development plan for the new store.

McCaughey said the plan is to tear down several barn-like storage buildings, with that area used to construct a new 37,000-square-foot retail store, while keeping the present store open. Once the new store is constructed, the old building will be torn down and the area used for parking, McCaughey said.

“It will conform with all setback requirements, which the current store does not,” McCaughey said.

New perimeter fencing will be installed and the driveway will be moved to line up with Stockton Avenue. McCaughey said no zoning variances will be needed to carry out the plan.

“It’s a very busy store and needs more room,” said Martina O’Leary, the administrator for business for the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation.

The Planning Commission approved the plans, pending a review of the storm water, sewage and erosion and sediment control plans for the site by K2 Engineering.

“The idea is to have it ready to go by September 2014,” McCaughey said.

In other matters, the Planning Commission approved a number of residential lot consolidations, combining vacant lots with adjacent occupied structures, five of which are owned by Rusty Mechling, and one owned by a family represented by Mechling. The consolidations were at 35 Grant St., 41 Lenox St., 6 Wilson Ave., 26 South Grant St., 59 Park St. and 69 Butler St.
