Connellsville man faces charges in burglary incident
A Connellsville man is facing numerous charges in connection with a burglary in the city, with additional charges to be filed soon.
David L. Stefan, 30, of 224 Queen St., was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. Charges were filed at the office of District Judge Wendy Dennis.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim told police that Stefan allegedly entered her residence on June 25 through an unlocked door when no one was home and stole two laptop computers and a Nintendo Wii gaming system.
Police Chief Jim Capitos said the computer’s owner used security software to track down the IP address and the wireless name being used. The owner was even able to provide the police a photograph of the person using the laptop taken by the laptop’s camera, police said.
Police were able to locate the laptop at a residence on East Apple Street, where the boyfriend and girlfriend told police they bought the computer from Stefan for $50.
Police said Stefan gave oral and written statements concerning the alleged incident.
In his statement to police, Stefan said he first knocked on the victim’s door, and when no one answered, he entered through an unlocked door, police said.
He said he sold the gaming system and the other laptop computer to another person, police said.
Capitos said charges are pending against Stefan for two additional residential burglaries including one on May 29 at a residence along Green Street and one on June 15 along Queen Street.
According to Capitos, five other people are going to be charged with receiving stolen property in connection with Stefan’s alleged crimes.
Stefan has been placed in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $25,000 straight cash bond.
Capitos said a preliminary hearing is expected to be scheduled later this week at the office of District Judge Ronald Haggerty Jr.
