Communities to host several Memorial Day programs, parades
People from communities in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties will bring out their red, white and blue for Memorial Day celebrations this weekend.
The following is a list of events in the area:
California
JFK American Legion Post 377 will honor deceased military veterans through several services, beginning at 8 a.m. in Daisytown. Services will follow at 8:30 a.m. in Smallwood, 9 a.m. in Coal Center, 9:30 a.m. at the Civil War memorial and 11 a.m. at Liberty Circle.
Carmichaels
The Carmichaels Honor Guard will hold a service at noon Sunday at the Garards Fort Cemetery, with Waynesburg police Chief Timothy Hawfield serving as guest speaker. At 1 p.m., state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, will serve as guest speaker for a service at the Greensboro Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Roll.
The honor guard also will hold numerous services on Monday, beginning with a service at 10 a.m. at the Nemacolin Honor Roll. At 11 a.m., Snyder, Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Dalene Watson and U.S. Army Reserves Lt. Col. Frank Pecjak will serve as guest speakers for a service at 11 a.m. at the Crucible Honor Roll. Following the service, a parade will begin at 11:45 a.m. at American Legion Post 400 and proceed to the Laurel Point Cemetery for a service. At 1 p.m. a luncheon will be provided at Carmichaels VFW Post 3491.
Dunbar
Dunbar American Legion Hughes Post 146 will host its annual Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday beginning at the old borough school. Diana Homer will serve as the the parade marshal and the master of ceremonies will be Nick Bell III. In addition, state Rep. Deberah Kula, D-North Union Township, will serve as the guest speaker.
Fairchance
The Alfred Wilson Memorial VFW will host a parade at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The parade will form at the bottom of Dry Knob Hill and proceed to the VFW post where the service will be held at 3:15 p.m. U.S. Navy Cmdr. Tim Flecker will serve as the keynote speaker at the service. Flecker retired from the Navy in 2012 after 20 years of service. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.
Fayette City
Brightwell-Daugherty American Legion Post 484 will host a Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday in Fayette City. A program will be held after the parade at Mount Auburn Cemetery and will feature Madonna Nicklow, director of the Fayette County Office of Veterans Affairs, as keynote speaker. After working for 15 years in the Fayette County Tax Claim Bureau, Nicklow was transferred to the Veterans Affair office in 2003. She has certification through the Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Vietnam Veterans of America and the National Association of County Veterans Serve Officers.
Fredericktown
Hanson-Cole Post 391 will hold numerous morning services on Memorial Day beginning at 8:40 a.m. at Buckingham Cemetery in Deemston. Other services will be held at 8:45 a.m. at the Fredericktown Hill Cemetery; the honor roll in Vestaburg at 9:15 a.m.; the World War II Honor Roll on Main Street in Fredericktown at 9:30 a.m.; the World War I Honor Roll in Newton at 9:45 a.m.; the Milfred Terrace Cemetery in Millsboro at 10 a.m.; the Honor Roll Cemetery in Clarksville at 10:20 a.m.; the riverfront in Fredericktown at 10:45 a.m.; and the municipal parking lot on Main Street in Fredericktown at 11 a.m.
Jefferson
The Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954 will hold a service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mather Honor Roll, with Pastor Carl Leipold of Clarksville Missionary Church to serve as speaker. There also will be a service at 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson Cemetery and at 11:45 a.m. in the veterans section of Greene County Memorial Park.
Mt. Morris
The James R. Maxon American Legion Post 992 will hold services at 11:30 a.m. at Kiger Cemetery and 11:45 a.m. at Claughton Chapel Cemetery on Sunday. The Legion also will hold services on Monday, beginning with a service at 10 a.m. at Mt. Morris United Methodist Church. The final Memorial Day ceremony hosted by Post 992 will take place at noon at Cedar Grove Cemetery, with John “Buzz” Walters as speaker.
New Geneva
Point Marion VFW Post 747 will conduct military services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery, featuring Pastor Robert Robinson of New Geneva Baptist Church as guest speaker.
Perryopolis
Perryopolis, Perry Township VFW Gold Star Post 7023 and American Legion Post 752 will conduct a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday in the Frazier High School auditorium. U.S. Army Sgt. Charles Thomas, a Vietnam veteran and holder of two Purple Heart medals, will serve as guest speaker. The program will be dedicated in honor of the veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Peter Pierotti, chairman of the Memorial Day program committee, and Robert Chuboy, Post 7023 commander, also will offer remarks.
Rices Landing
The Brooks-Cargo American Legion Post 816 will hold a Memorial Day parade at 2 p.m. Sunday beginning at the Legion hall and proceeding to the honor roll, located between Hewitt Cemetery and Hewitt Presbyterian Church. Thomas Shumaker, western vice commander for the Department of the Pennsylvania American Legion, will serve as the speaker for the ceremonies, and the Rev. Geoff Roch will give the invocation. A second service will be held at the Crucible Cemetery Honor Roll.
Uniontown
The United Veterans Association (UVA) of Uniontown will hold its annual program at 10 a.m. at Sylvan Heights Cemetery on North Gallatin Avenue Extension with United Veterans Cmdr. Louis Giachetti serving as master of ceremonies. The program will be held on the Avenue of Flags. Jim Clark, UVA chaplain, will offer the invocation, and Uniontown Mayor Ed Fike will give the welcoming address.VFW Post 8543 will play the national anthem and patriotic music.
Waynesburg
VFW Post 4793 will hold a service at 11 a.m. Monday at the post with David Szarell, a one-star general, serving as the speaker.
