Mary Ethel (Rohrer) McElroy

Mary Ethel (Rohrer) McElroy, 90, of Hopwood, Pennsylvania went to rejoin the love of her life of 56 years, Harry, on Monday, May 20, 2013.

She was born on April 15, 1923 in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania, one of four beloved children of Charles H. Rohrer and Margaret (Blair) Rohrer, both now deceased.

Mary was raised in West Brownsville, graduated from Brownsville High School in 1941 and attended Temple University School of Nursing graduating in 1944, before becoming a commisioned officer in the United States Navy. She proudly served our country as a Navy Nurse during WWII, caring for the servicemen coming home.

After her Navy career, her love of nursing carried her to Massachusetts General Hospital, Uniontown Hospital and Waynesburg Hospital where she worked for years in their labor and delivery departments. She retired from nursing after working for Dr. Charles Sloan.

Mary had been a resident of Hopwood, Pennsylvania for 40 years. She was a long time member of Third Presbyterian Church and the Grace Bible class. She volunteered many hours for the Uniontown Hopsital Auxilliary, she was also a member of the Uniontown Service League. She was a past member of Eastern Star.

M a r y volunteered many hours to the International Order of Rainbow for Girls where she received the Cross of Color.

She is survived by her loving children David (Cindy) and Mary Anne (Ralph). She has 5 grandchildren whom she absolutely adored: Lauren (Jeffrey), Jeffrey (Ashley), Katie (Chris), Breanne (Jonathan), and Seth. She had recently become a great grandmother to Isabelle and Jonathan David.

Mary is also survived by her devoted brother Charles Rohrer and numerous nephews and nieces. Her beloved cat Charlie will miss her.

Family and friends will be received in the H. DAVID MCELROY FUNERAL HOME, 803 Main Street McClellandtown, Pennsylvania on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, May 25 in THIRD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 425 Union Street, Uniontown, Pennsylvania from 10 until 11 a.m., the hour of Service. Rev. Chris Enoch will officiate.

Interment will follow in Church Hill Cemetery, McClellandtown, Pennsylvania.

Military Rites and Honors will be conducted by the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood.
