Veterans star in program

By Dave Slusarick 2 min read

If there’s one thing that’s been a constant throughout American history, it’s that brave men and women have always stepped forward to serve their country. For our military personnel, life after a tour of duty can be difficult. They often fail to receive understanding or appreciation from others, and they struggle to find meaningful employment. Even worse, the PTSD Foundation of America reports that one in three returning troops are diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder symptoms that often go untreated.

Unfortunately, for some of us, Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day are the only times of the year when we take the time to truly think about our living and deceased servicemen and women.

Last Monday, Fayette TV’s community partners at Amedisys Albert Gallatin Home Health and Hospice provided us with a poignant reminder to appreciate our veterans every day. The “We Honor Veterans” program, held at the Uniontown Mall, was a fitting tribute to the Americans whose sacrifices have helped us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.

The program included a presentation by our local students from the Albert Gallatin Junior ROTC, under the direction of Major Jason Dunkelberger and Sargeant First Class Barbara Harmon. The AMVETS Post 103 Honor Guard led a flag ceremony, and all veterans in attendance were pinned with commemorative insignia. State Reps. Deberah Kula (D-North Union Township) and Timothy Mahoney (D-South Union Township) both lent their support to the program. Jim Shetler of the Wounded Warriors offered a touching poem.

One of the most moving parts of the day was the reading of names that had been written on stars hung on a special “memory tree” coordinated by Amedisys Albert Gallatin Home Health and Hospice and made possible by a donation from Pam Moore at the Uniontown Mall.

Thanks to Mary Ellen Gumro and Maryann Chury of Amedisys for allowing Fayette TV to be a part of this special day, and thank you to our veterans. All gave some, and some gave all.
