UMWA training center gets MSHA grant

1 min read

The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) Career Centers Inc. in Washington County was one of five recipients of education and training grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

MSHA awarded the UMWA center $179,289 from a pool of $582,804 in total grant funds through its Brookwood-Sago program that provides education and training within the mining industry. The UMWA grant is second-year funding for mine rescue skills contest training. Participating in well-designed mine rescue contests is vital for mine rescue personnel to maintain and improve mine emergency preparedness protocols, MSHA said.

After completing classroom curriculum and training exercises, trainees will apply their knowledge in a variety of hands-on training scenarios in simulated coal mines.
