Walter A. Scarton
Walter A. Scarton, age 91, Masontown, Pa., died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
He was born June 22, 1922 in Portage, Pa., son of Anthony and Fidalma (Damin) Scarton.
During World War II, Walter proudly served his country with the United States Army in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation.
He was a Life Member and Past Commander of the Faith-Gray-McArdle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4584, member of the Firing Squad for Military Honors, a Life Member of Fort Mason American Legion Post 423, and a member of the George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, Pa.
Walter was a retired Foreman with United States Steel Corporation and member of the Mine Disaster Rescue Team.
He was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, formerly All Saints Roman Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council and was a church Usher for many years.
Walter was the former Mayor of Masontown and served as a Masontown Borough Councilman.
He was Past President and ‘Man of the Year’ Award recipient for the Masontown Exchange Club.
Walter was a member of the Italo-American Citizens Club and also the Pals Social Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary ‘Ruby’ (Tiberi) Scarton on October 18, 2004; sisters, Armeda Grigoletto and Dolores ‘Dolly’ Iachini; brothers, Valerio ‘Baio’ Scarton, Bruno Scarton, and an infant brother; also a son-in-law, Ron Petrus; sister-in-law Pearl Baran and brother-in-law, John Vincent ‘J.V.’ Tiberi.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: daughters, Teri Fogt and her husband Steve of Bethlehem, Pa., Regina Sloan and her husband Albert of Uniontown, Pa., and Mayor Toni Petrus of Masontown, Pa.; six grandchildren: Susan Fogt, Julie Fogt, C r a i g Schuessler, Kim Schuessler, Leslie McLaughlin and husband Frank, Rebecca Palmer and husband Will; three step-grandchildren: Jeremy Sloan, Matt Sloan, and Mary Burnett; great granddaughters: Gianna Schuessler and Carisa Fogt; nine step-great grandchildren: Alicia Sloan, Emma Sloan, Marley Sloan, Jacob Sloan, Eli Sloan, Abel Sloan, Callum Burnett, Xavier Burnett, and Levi Gall; a sister, Edith ‘Dita’ Geriak of Portage, Pa.; special family member, Scott Schuessler of Smithfield, Pa.; brother-in-law, Joe Iachini of Ebensburg, Pa; sister-in-law, Dorothy Scarton of Portage, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He also leaves behind his ‘grand-dogs’, who knew him as ‘cookie man’: Chloe, Molly, Cody, Ava, Bella, Roxy and Cassidy.
The family prefers contributions to Fayette Friends of Animals, 223 Village of Searights, or Fayette County SPCA, 215 Rankin Airshaft Road, both Uniontown, PA 15401.
Friends will be received at the HAKY FUNERAL HOME INC., 515 North Main Street, Masontown, Pa., Tuesday October 8, from 3 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, October 9, until 9:30 a.m. when Prayers of Transfer will be said.
The Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, 101 West Church Avenue Masontown, Pa., with Rev. Father William G. Berkey as Celebrant.
Military Honors will be accorded by Fort Mason American Legion Post 423 with the Faith-Gray-McArdle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4584 as Firing Squad following the Funeral Mass.
Private interment services will be held for the family.
